SOCOGAS believes that replacing cooking fuels such as firewood, coal and oil with butane gas does not only mean a better comfort and quality of life, but also an evolution in terms of public health. There are studies that indicate that air pollution due to cooking with biomass and charcoal inside houses is the second cause of death in developing countries, right after deaths associated with waterborne diseases. In S.Tomé and Príncipe, according to UNICEF data, respiratory diseases are the main cause of infant mortality, and a substantial part of these diseases is associated with breathing pollutants released by the combustion of firewood and charcoal in households.

The use of woody fuels, which represent more than 50% of the fuel used by Santomean families for cooking, also constitutes a serious environmental danger due to the harmful and devastating effects on the flora, both in terms of cutting trees and in the destruction of soils in the preparation of charcoal.

Thus, in addition to the environmental effects linked to the reduction of deforestation and the emission of greenhouse gases, the widespread use of LPG has important consequences for public health. There are studies that conclude that the use of clean fuels for cooking food, including LPG, has an impact on several Sustainable Development Goals.
